Read full description of the books The Lies We Keep:Ten years ago, Margaret faced a major crisis in her life when her husband flew to New York for a sales pitch meeting with a potential client in the World Trade Center on the day of the 9/11 attacks and became one of the missing victims. Even though she remarried to a loving man and model stepfather to her son, the memories of her first marriage continue to haunt her. So, imagine her shock when she sees an assistant cook in a Sedona, Arizona restaurant that appears to be her first husband, older and alive! Alex remembers that day when his meeting was delayed so he went back down to the street level for a smoke just as the first jet struck the towers. In the confusion, he just decided to walk away, head west and take on a new identity and a simpler life. But now, a decade later, as he is arguing with a crazy ex-girlfriend behind the restaurant where he works, could that really be the wife he left so long ago looking at him so confused at the entrance to the alley? This was a very complex and involved tale of mainly two individuals having to face the past and dredge up their own inner secrets in search of some sort of resolution. The flowing stream of consciousness perspectives of Alex and Margaret, with one side chapter of their son’s perspective, will task many readers, as the characters’ thoughts constantly flash back and forth into time, but patience of those readers up to the challenge will slowly provide answers to the motivations that drove these characters to the current moment in time and will lead them to resolution. The story set-up is a hyped-up stretch, but acceptable in understanding the themes in the tale. In the version I read, editing errors were at an acceptable level.
